Article 39A of the Constitution provides that the State shall provide

free legal aid to the poor. Keeping this object in mind, the

Parliament enacted the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Lok

Adalats are constituted under this Act. Lok Adalats are disposing of

large number of cases expeditiously and without much cost. They

have become popular in providing a speedier system of

administration of justice. Lok Adalats dispose of the cases in a

summary way, through a process of arbitration, conciliation and
